Shadow and Bone is Netflix's hit young adult fantasy series. The show follows Alina Starkov as she discovers she is a Grisha, a powerful magic user. Netflix adapted several books by author Leigh Bardugo, which are part of the Grishaverse shared universe.

Netflix's Shadow and Bone takes characters and storylines from the Shadow and Bone trilogy and the Six of Crows duology. There are seven books in the Grishaverse, as well as two short story collections and a graphic novel prequel. While each series can be read on their own, these books are best read in order, as some important plot points might be hard to follow otherwise.
1 Shadow And Bone (2012)

Shadow and Bone is the first book in the Shadow and Bone trilogy and kicks off the entire Grishaverse. It introduces readers to Alina Starkov and her childhood best friend, Malyen. It also introduces the nation of Ravka and the Grisha, people with special gifts who form Ravka's Second Army.

The first book in the Shadow and Bone trilogy takes its time to build its fictional world and presents fans with a compelling mystery. As Alina tries to save Mal from an attack, she finds out she might have Grisha powers. As such, the leader of the Second Army takes Alina under his wing and decides to train her.
2 Siege And Storm (2013)

Siege and Storm follows Alina and Mal as they escape Ravka after the events of the first book. Alina realizes The Darkling might want to use her powers for some questionable missions, so she chooses to leave the Second Army. Siege and Storm is the inspiration for Shadow and Bone's second season.

Siege and Storm is the second book in the Shadow and Bone trilogy. It offers readers even more world-building, as Alina finds herself in Cofton, a small city in Novyi Zem. Knowing the Darkling is hunting her, Alina must look for legendary artifacts that might enhance her powers. Alina travels through different places, like Bone Road, while searching for these magical artifacts with Mal's help.
3 Ruin And Rising (2014)

Ruin and Rising marks the end of the Shadow and Bone trilogy. After a fight with the Darkling in Siege and Storm, Alina loses her powers and is weak. She has to stay in hiding while she recovers and come up with another plan to defeat the Darkling.

The Shadow and Bone trilogy follows Alina's journey from a regular teenager to Saint. Ruin and Rising sees the end of her story as she comes face-to-face with the Darkling one final time. Alina must accept her destiny and make some hard choices to save Ravka in this 2014 book.
4 Six Of Crows (2015)

Six of Crows is the first book in the Six of Crows duology and the fourth within the Grishaverse. It follows a group of thieves and outcasts as they try to complete an impossible heist. Six of Crows introduces Kaz, Inej, Jesper, Wylan, Nina, and Matthias, who are also part of the Shadow and Bone TV series.

Six of Crows takes place primarily in Ketterdam, a city in the small island nation of Kerch. While the Six of Crows duology is an independent story, it's set two years after the end of the Shadow and Bone trilogy. Readers might get a few spoilers from Alina's story if they choose to read the Six of Crows duology first.
5 Crooked Kingdom (2016)

Crooked Kingdom continues the story from Six of Crows and is the fifth book in the Grishaverse. It follows Kaz and his crew as they return from their almost-impossible heist. Instead of celebrating, though, they must fight for their lives as a winged Shu man kidnaps a member of the crew and another betrays the rest of the team.

Crooked Kingdom is the final book in the Six of Crows duology. It takes place days after the events of Six of Crows and introduces some new characters. While the duology completes Kaz and his crew's story, some of the characters return in another book series in the Grishaverse.
